Science Instructors Debate the Efficacy of Conducting Lab Courses Online
From the Chronical of Higher Education, March 10, 2000.
Virtual Laboratory
Java labs for an engineering course, from Johns Hopkins University. "The objective of the course and the virtual laboratory is to introduce students to experimentation, problem solving, data gathering, and scientific interpretation early in their careers--perhaps as high school seniors or college freshmen."
The Virtual Lab
A project proposal. "The Virtual Laboratory empowers students to create information on the internet by collecting it from the physical world. Remote computer access to laboratory instruments allows undergraduate students to conduct actual experiments at any time and from any location. This technology greatly enhances the flexibility of laboratory education, and introduces students to the new paradigm of remote experimentation."
Biology Labs On-Line (Free trial available.)
"Biology Labs On-Line offers a series of interactive, inquiry-based biology simulations and exercises designed for college and AP high school biology students." Includes Fly Lab, Evolution Lab, Translation Lab, Demography Lab, Hemoglobin Lab, Pedigree Lab, Mitochondria Lab, Leaf Lab, Cardio Lab.
Geology Labs On-Line
"Geology Labs On-Line is a comprehensive project to develop Web-based lab activities that enhance the learning and teaching of Geology and other Earth Science courses at the College and High School AP level. These 'Virtual' labs are interactive where students learn by 'doing' and not just clicking and viewing." Includes Virtual Dating-Isochron, Virtual River-Discharge, Virtual Dating-Radiocarbon and Virtual Earthquake; others coming soon.
Telelabs
A Telelearning Network Centre of Excellence Telelabs project website (beta version). Partners are Laval University, University of Western Ontario and Simon Fraser University. "The goal of this laboratory is to provide virtual labs to teachers and students."
Explorescience
"Our Shockwave Activities create real-time correlations between scientific theories and applications that help students visualize, experiment, and interact with many of the major concepts in science." Also allows instructors to set up free course web pages.
Exploremath
"Our Shockwave Activities create real-time correlations between equations and graphs that help students visualize and experiment with many of the major concepts from Elementary Algebra through Pre-Calculus." Also allows instructors to set up free course web pages.
The Chemistry Place (Free trial available)
"The ever-expanding resources at The Chemistry Place are created by teams of leading educators in partnership with Peregrine Publishers to offer students, educators, and anyone with a desire to learn about chemistry the chance to:
.
The Biology Place (Free trial available)
Same as the above, with "chemistry" replaced by "biology".
The Psychology Place (Free trial available)
From the same group (Peregrine Publishers). "The Psychology Place is a subscription-based Web resource for psychology students and educators at the college and high school levels."
Math on the Web
A list of links to accompany a talk (Sept 29, 1999). Interesting and informative links on putting math text on the web and on interactive math on the web.
