TITLE: Decomposing Monotone Operators

ABSTRACT: We shall describe some understudied work of Edgar Asplund on how to decompose a maximal monotone operator into a subgradient and a `skew' part---and will indicate why this is a very useful idea. We shall also discuss more recent work of Borwein-Bauschke and Phelps-Simons. Finally we will pose some open research questions.
