CECM Applied Analysis and Optimization Seminar

November 21, 2002 from 9:30 - 11:30 in CoLab, SFU

Speakers: Adrian Lewis and Warren Hare

Adrian Lewis, SFU
Talks on: "NUMERICAL OPTIMIZATION OF MATRIX STABILITY"

Abstract: Robust stability problems in feedback control involve varying a parametrized matrix in order to move its eigenvalues "robustly" into the left halfplane. I will discuss various notions of robustness, and present some graphical illustrations of computational approaches.

Warren Hare, SFU
Talks on: "ON THE ANALYSIS OF CRITICAL POINTS"

Abstract: By adding the assumption of prox-regularity for partly smooth functions, we can develop strong results discribing when critical points are local minimums. In this talk I discuss prox-regularity, partial smoothness, and their consequences.
