Title: "Trigonometry In Medieval Islam, From Start To Finish"

Abstract: Without computers or calculus, the scientists of medieval Islam were nevertheless able to apply trigonometry to quantify their astronomical surroundings, often with great ingenuity. We begin by surveying some of the more sophisticated methods used to construct accurate trigonometric tables, which were the foundation of mathematical astronomy. Next we shall observe an episode in tenth-century Iraq, containing a typical astronomical application, which led to the establishment of trigonometry as a discipline independent of astronomy.
