About Myself

Born: Prince George, British Columbia

Education:
1980: Honours Math and Computer Science B.Sc. UBC
1982: Master's of Mathematics, Waterloo
1987: Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering, UBC

Family:
I met my wife, Sumaya, when our high school debating teams met (we've never formally debated, which is a good thing as I don't suppose we'd be married now if she had beaten me then). We both went to UBC, and were married in 1981. I joined the department of Applied Mathematics at the University of Western Ontario in London, Ontario immediately after getting my Ph.D. We took all of three days to fall in love with London. Our daughter Shamila was born in 1988, and we are happy to live here still.

Interests: My other interests are aerobics (Sumaya has been teaching aerobics for nearly 15 years now---unfortunately for my waistline she's also a terrific cook, in the Cape Malay style), walking, birds, whisky, and reading. Comments: But the most important thing to keep in mind is to keep the enjoyment level up. I love my work, and occasionally find it satisfying on a level deeper and more personal than would be believed by any non-mathematician. "I love my job so much, I'd do it for nothing. Unfortunately, they know that."
